Paramount and Marvel Studios’ Thor stayed at No. 1 in its second weekend, grossing an estimated $34.5 million for a domestic cume of $119.3 million. The superhero pic fell less than expected, or 48 percent (Fast Five fell 62 percent in its second outing). Worldwide, Thor has now cumed north of $300 million.
Universal continued its recent winning streak with Paul Feig’s R-rated Bridesmaids, produced by Judd Apatow. The pic grossed $24.6 million — well more than expected — to come in No. 2, according to Rentrak.
Fast Five, also from Universal, held well in its third weekend, dropping less than 40 percent to an estimated $19.5 million domestically. The action movie has now earned $168.8 million in North America and $271.1 million internationally, for an eye-popping global cume of $440.5 million. It’s now the most successful film in the franchise.
Sony and Screen Gems’ Priest 3D debuted to No. 4 domestically, grossing an estimated $14.6 million to come in ahead of expectations. Overseas, the Paul Bettany starrer is doing better business, cuming $25.6 million in its first two weekends.
Overall, domestic box office revenues were down just 3 percent from the same weekend last year.
