Lohan is serving about 35 days under house detention, instead of spending time in jail, after her conviction for shoplifting a necklace from a Venice jewelry store in January.
The "Mean Girls" actress is required to wear an ankle monitoring device that randomly checks via a base unit that she is within the premises of her home. Law enforcement sources told The Times that her monitoring unit went off Tuesday, though it's unclear why.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said Lohan is restricted to the premises, including the home's exterior areas, for the period of detention. Lohan is allowed visitors but cannot consume alcohol or narcotics and is subject to random tests if officials desire, he said.

Probation officials can also enter her home at any time to check she is in compliance with her probation and custody requirements, he said.
The actress was sentenced on May 11 to 120 days in jail, but overcrowding at the jail facility and state rules will reduce the time she must be confined to her home.
