Navy Days Celebration in Malibu

A 500-foot U.S. Navy destroyer equipped with Tomahawk and Harpoon cruise missiles filled the coastal horizon Friday in Malibu, usually the reserve of surfers and the occasional mega-yacht.

The John Paul Jones, the warship named for the Navy’s first hero is parked off Malibu for the three-day Navy Days celebration, in which the community plans to thank the sailors and their families for their service to the country.

Donning their Navy whites, about 280 sailors, including 33 officers and 39 chief petty officers, will be in Malibu on shore-leave shifts throughout the weekend.

The event is sponsored by the Malibu Navy League, Malibu Chamber of Commerce and the city. Some Malibu residents will even get to tour the ship, which has seen active duty off Iraq.
