"Hairspray" at the Hollywood Bowl

"Hairspray," as Harvey Fierstein reminds us, is not a message show, although you can take home a few lessons from the Tony Award-winning musical.

Fierstein won a Tony for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad, the overweight mother of the overweight teen Tracy Turnblad, who tries to integrate a local TV dance program in 1962 Baltimore.

Based on John Waters' 1988 film, "Hairspray" was turned into the 2002 hit Broadway musical, winning eight Tonys, and was subsequently made into a film again in 2007.

Now Fierstein is back to reprise his role of Edna for a three-night run at the Hollywood Bowl.

Also onboard is Darlene Love, who although not a member of the original cast, played the fiery record store owner Motormouth Mabel for nearly three years on Broadway.
